MAKING THE SECOND CASE FOR CHANGE

If you read “MAKING THE FIRST CASE FOR CHANGE,” you as the intelligent Union reader must have figured out that some celestial entity, natural phenomenon or earthly group of beings is responsible for the successes and failures of this set of negotiations. You already know that DTE management is responsible for minimizing the represented workforce’s contribution to the success of DTE Energy by demanding concessions while it continues to make great profits and bestow disproportionate salaries and benefits to its upper echelon of managers. Right? The pie was baked; you helped bake it and got a skinny piece. Wasn’t the negotiating committee supposed to get you a decent slice? Well it finally did with the help of the National Union.

Points to consider asking your Chairperson:

·        How come our negotiating team couldn’t get that same deal without the National Union help?

·        It’s no secret that the entire negotiating team wasn’t present. How does that work? Didn’t we as Membership elect our Chairperson to represent the interests of our Division at the main table negotiations? So how come there were some not present?

·        Was one of them you?

·        Did you voluntarily agree not to participate or was it forced upon you?

·        What value or position did you bring to the table that spoke for the members of our Division?

Points to ask yourself:

  • Is my Chairperson representing me as I think is appropriate?
  • Did my Chairperson take our Divisions wishes and demands to the table?
  • Did he or she agree to absent themselves from the negotiations process?
  • Does that process serve my purpose?
  • Is my Chairperson getting me information?
  • Is it information that makes sense and is truthful?
  • When teams are not producing isn’t it appropriate to change the players as well as the process?
  • How do all the above questions apply to the 4 Local officers ?
